New Swimming Pool / Expanded Baseball Diamonds Project

The Arthur Park Board with the assistance of local citizens on an advisory committee, is pursuing the construction of a new public swimming pool to replace the current pool which is badly in need of costly repairs.

In developing a future needs plan for the park district, the advisory committee also recommended adding additional ball diamonds to the project to aleviate current ball diamond scheduling problems and also allow the park district to host larger tournaments.

According to engineering consultants, the proposed replacement/expansion would cost approximately $3,679,000. Grants are available to assist with financing and land acquisition and currently consideration is being given to placing a referendum on the Fall 2008 ballot, or borrowing money by issuing debt certificate, non-referendum general obligation bonds or alternative bonds. All of these methods would ultimately be subject to voter approval.

The current replacement/expansion plans propose replacing the pool in its current location behind the high school, and to purchase additional land for 3 or more new ball diamonds to the south, near the current ball diamonds in Jurgens Park.

The Park Board commissioners want to hear from the public on this issue. The commissioners are Andy Bernius, President, Tim Likens, Duane Hopkins, Shawn Vanausdol, and Marvin Reeves. Additionally the public is encouraged to attend any Park Board meeting.
